I'm not sure what other hiking areas are like around the world but I know some of the roads in Pennsylvania are brutal on feet and ankles.
I hiked about 11 miles on the Appalachian trail about 7 years ago and I wore old boots. They did the trick for traction but forget about ankle support on the load of rocks in the road.
Get the best of both functions when picking out a pair of hiking boots and don't be afraid to spend money. My new pair that my wife bought me about 2 years ago are Goretex and keep my feet bone dry in addition to the other features. If you buy cheap boots you'll be buying them again in a year.
